About the Role

We are seeking a General Legal Counsel to join our Corporate Services team. This is a newly created position due to growth in the business. Initially reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer there will be a direct line to the CEO in advising and providing guidance regarding commercial risk in the business, primarily responsible for providing high level internal legal advice and support for all staff within the ADG Group.

Key Accountabilities

  • Developing relationships across all levels of the business.
  • Reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts with clients, including advising internally on risk and mitigation measures.
  • Advising on relevant legislation, regulations and providing advice and assistance to the business and operations (with assistance from external legal advisers where necessary) and assisting with approvals related litigation.
  • Preparation of internal legal papers for the Senior Leadership Team and Board, along with management of external legal advisers as required.
  • Review, assess and provide advice on legal risks associated with contracts, tenders, and pre-contractual documentation, to ensure a better balance between commercially acceptable terms and reduction of risk to ADG.
  • Advise on and actively manage legal disputes and litigation including preparation of strategy, pleadings, and other court documents.
  • Providing support to the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operations Officer with regards to managing risk and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and legislation.
  • Identify risks in day-to-day business, developing and implementing suitable risk mitigation strategies.
  • Manage our insurance program for Australia.
  • Designing and delivering training to ADG employees, providing advice on the application of regulatory requirements and best practice methodologies in managing legal and compliance risks.

 About the Person

  • You will be someone with strong business partnering skills that can communicate well at C-suite level whilst also building relationships and advising other operational / project managers in the business. The successful candidate will have a strong negotiation ability and highly developed written communications skills with a background in the production of legal, policy and regulatory documents.

 Skills & Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in Law (required)
  • Admission as a legal practitioner in Queensland (required)
  • Relevant industry experience within a consulting and/or engineering business environment is desirable.
  • 6+ years post-qualified experience, with a minimum of 4 years’ experience in construction or commercial law (required).
  • Commercial mindset of current construction market conditions
  • Demonstrated experience in providing high-quality legal services and analysis.
  • Demonstrated high level professional judgement in complex and sensitive matters.
  • A proven team player with exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Proven track record in identifying and implementing change.
  • Intermediate to advanced level skills with MS Office.
